Stop it. Stop buying expensive cereals. Please. It’s so easy to make your very own granola at home. For literally 15 minutes of actual labor, you have two weeks of breakfasts prepared for 45 cents a serving.
I can only imagine the savings if I had obtained all of my ingredients in bulk/at a cheaper supplier. Really though, I’m just trying to let everyone know that even with pricy ingredients, making food from scratch is often the most lucrative alternative.
Let’s do some math to illustrate this point:
Homemade Flax Seed, Cranberry, and Walnut Granola/pound: $2.79
Bear Naked Fruit And Nut All Natural Granola/pound: $7.72
*Keep in mind all prices are taken from the same Seattle area Safeway store.
Flax Seed, Cranberry, and Walnut Granola
4 cups rolled oats - $1.53
1 cup wheat germ - $0.32
1 cup flax seed meal - $0.80
1/2 cup brown sugar - $0.21
1 cup walnuts, chopped - $2.20
1 tsp ground cinnamon - $0.05
1/2 tsp salt - $0.01
1/3 cup vegetable oil - $0.18
1/4 cup honey - $0.70
1 tsp imitation vanilla - $0.03
1/2 cup water - free
1 cup dried cranberries - $1.13
- Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
- Whisk together all wet ingredients in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together all dry ingredients except dried cranberries. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix until every bit of the oat mixture is covered.
- Spread mixture into a large, greased baking sheet and bake for an hour total, stirring half-way through the baking process. For chunkier granola, be sure to press mixture into baking sheet.
- Once mixture is out of oven, immediately add dried cranberries, and let cool.
Makes approximately 16 (1/2 cup) servings.
